24-25 October 2009
The 2009 Dance Around the World, Festival of Traditional Dance, will take place on Saturday and Sunday, 24-25 October at Cecil Sharp House in Camden Town, London U.K. The general format of the event will be similar to that of previous years with continuous demonstrations in the upstairs hall and workshops in the two downstairs rooms and in the marquee in the garden.
The latest version of this year's programme can be downloaded by clicking on the links at the bottom of this page. You can also look at archived programmes from previous years by clicking on the links on the right side of the page. On Saturday evening, carnival comes to the festival in the sensational Latin/American Night. That’s in the upstairs hall, while in the downstairs hall Filé Gumbo host a Cajun Dance with the Bon Temps Playboys. On Sunday evening you can join the eclectic International Barn Dance with dances from many countries and cultures. No previous experience is required. Downstairs attend the conference event, Out of Africa, which will focus on the diaspora of African dance. It’s all part of the festival with no additional charges!
The 2009 prices as shown on the HOME page have changed only slightly. We keep the price as low as possible and still be able to pay for the basic costs of putting on the festival. Neither the organizers nor the various participating dance groups are paid. Nevertheless, there are considerable expenses that must be covered. All the performers have free access to all the activities of the entire festival and part of the spirit of the festival is the interaction of participants from many different countries and cultures. In general all the groups are from the rich cultural mix of the Greater London area, as there is no budget to bring groups from overseas. Despite the lack of monetary payment, most of the groups look forward to participating in the festival again.
